Sealing parquet floors

Sealing of parquet floors

Following the installation of parquet floors, for the perfect finish use a parquet sealant to seal between adjoining tiles and around the perimeter of the room (floor and wall joint) below the skirting boards. We will explain exactly how to tackle this job in these practical instructions.

Instructions

1. Installation of skirting boards

Following the step by step instructions on the Bonding of Skirting Boards

2. Leave to dry and tape off the sealant edges

Wait until the adhesive has fully hardened before you start sealing. Choose an elastic joint filler such as Soudal Parquet Sealant for the joint between the floor and skirting board. This absorbs the movement of the joint. The upper joints of the skirting board absorb less movement and can be sealed using Soudal Decorators Caulk. Use masking tape to neatly tape off the sealant edges. The joint will then be nice and straight. Make sure that the joint is at least 5mm wide.

3. Open the cartridge

Cut the top off the cartridge with a safety cutter. Turn the nozzle on top and cut the end at a slant. Achieve the best results by cutting the tip of the nozzle to the size of the joint you want to fill. Put the cartridge in the gun and squeeze the handle to extrude the sealant.

4. Start filling

Place the nozzle where you want to start filling. Squeeze the handle and move the caulking gun over the joint in a smooth movement. Apply sufficient sealant to ensure that the product adheres well and seals the joint.

5. Smooth and remove the tape

Wet your finger or a finishing tool with clean water. Smooth the joint and immediately remove the masking tape. Smooth carefully again to smooth away any protruding edges.

Tip:

  • Choose a sealant of the same colour as your floor to achieve the best finish. Soudal Parquet Sealant can be bought in 10 different colours, each named in accordance with the wood type it is most suited to.
  • If you have spilt the parquet sealant, you can remove it with water as long as the product has not cured.

The following is also useful:

  • Quickly clean your hands with Soudal Swipex wipes.
  • Parquet sealant is suitable for wood, parquet floor and laminate floors. Do you have a natural stone floor? Use Soudal Silirub MA to seal your joints.
