Bonding of wood and board material

Reclaimed wood DIY projects for your home

DIY wood crafts are very on trend, repurposing old furniture and upcycling. You can do wonders with reclaimed wood around your home. If you have some spare wooden planks, drift wood or left-over pieces of wood from another DIY project, you can create unique pieces of furniture amongst many other indoor and outdoor decorative items.

Soudal has a range of wood adhesives to help you exercise your creativity and assist you with any DIY wood projects. See below instructions on how to create a wooden tray or table mat.

Instructions

1. Collect scrap wood

Choose non-impregnated or untreated wood: pinewood strips, scrap multiplex or any surplus of precious woods such as oak, teak or walnut. The more scrap wood you use, the larger your tray will be.

2. Bond the wood

Sand the wood using fine sandpaper to remove any irregularities on the joining surfaces. Make sure substrates are dust and grease-free. Stir the Soudal Wood Adhesive in a pot or shake the bottle before you start. Apply the adhesive to the surfaces that you would like to bond. Use a fine-toothed spreader or brush to get the best result.

3. Clamp together

When you have joined the planks, use screw clamps to hold them firmly together during the curing process. Position the screw clamps at equal distances from each other and tighten them uniformly. Wipe off surplus adhesive using a wet cloth and allow it to dry for 20 minutes.

4. Plane to an equal thickness and sand it smooth

Loosen the screw clamps. Use a planing machine to give your composite plank an equal thickness. Sand smooth using a fine grade of sandpaper.

5. Finish

Fix handles onto your tray or paint your table mats

Tip

If you don’t have a planing machine, saw the wood strips and planks to obtain the same thickness before you bond them together.

The following is also useful:

  • If you prefer not to drill into your tray, fix the handles using Soudal Fix ALL Turbo. You can glue metal, stone, plastic and wood with this hybrid polymer adhesive. You do not have to clamp. The adhesive will be dry and ready for use after 3 hours.
